This piece is dedicated to the human form its power to speak volumes. This piece is part of a Protest Collection called El Óleo, curated to bring remembrance to the protest against First Quantum Minerals. A Canadian mining company. In Panama, Protesters took to the streets and blockaded highways nationwide for over four weeks in October and November 2023.
Protesters were considered that the mine was destroying pristine rainforest, threatening vital water supplies, and exploiting the country’s natural resources. This became one of the largest protest in Panama since the 1980’s. The courts ruled unanimously that the contract was unconstitutional forcing the indefinite shutdown of the mine.
We used material’s like organic willow charcoal and olive oil to mimic resources such as crude oil. How was it made? We rented out a studio for a fulls day production. May this piece bring inspiration and beauty to your space.
